HANDFISH
The Handfish is one of Australia's most unusual and rare reef dwellers, famous for using its modified fins to ‘walk' across the seafloor rather than swim. Found primarily in southern Australian waters, it moves slowly and deliberately over sand and seagrass. This behavior makes it highly distinctive but also vulnerable to environmental change. Handfish rely on camouflage and stillness to ambush small prey. Several species are critically endangered due to habitat loss and limited mobility. Our exhibit highlights this extraordinary fish and the importance of protecting Australia's most fragile marine species.
