PINEAPPLE FISH
The Pineapple Fish is a nocturnal reef species easily recognized by its armored, scale-like body and glowing underbelly. Found in deeper or sheltered reef environments, it hides in caves during the day and emerges at night to feed. The glow comes from bioluminescent bacteria housed in specialized light organs beneath its eyes. This light may help with communication or hunting in low-light conditions. Pineapple Fish move slowly and deliberately, relying on armor rather than speed for protection. Our exhibit reveals one of the reef's most unusual nighttime inhabitants.
